Stories from the Education Project

“Joan”

Joan lives with her guardian, Eunice. Joan is 17 years old and a Senio in high school studying O’levels.

Eunice recalled, "I often saw Joan walking by to collect water. She always had a smile on her face, and I couldn't help but wonder why she wasn't in school. One day, I asked her directly, 'Why aren't you in school?' Joan explained that her mother couldn’t afford the school fees. Moved by her situation, I decided to use part of my modest salary to help cover her school costs. That was back in 2020."

Craig and Janine first encountered Joan while she was singing at a school event they attended. They were immediately captivated by her talent and spirit. Curious about her story, they spoke to the bursar and learned about Eunice’s generous sacrifice—working extra hours in a small MTN booth to support her own studies while also helping Joan. Impressed by this story of selflessness, For Another Human decided to offer Joan a scholarship.

Joan shared her gratitude, saying, "I can't thank Eunice enough for believing in me, for seeing me, and for giving me the chance to go to school. I never thought this opportunity would come my way, and I never imagined I would be able to attend senior school. I am also deeply grateful to Mama Janine, Uncle Craig and my UK sponsor for making this possible. When I grow up, I hope to help many other young girls in need, just as I was helped."

We believe that every single child who has the opportunity to go to school will have the chance to change the course of their life and the future of their community.

There are many barriers to girls attending school in Uganda, from gender inequality to financial and health-related barriers.

Only 24.9% of girls complete lower secondary school. Sadly, those who are unable to attend school are at a higher risk of teen pregnancy, forced child marriage, domestic servitude and even human trafficking.

By supporting scholarships through for another human, you give a girl a future.
